ACT + Canberra Information

Australian Capital Territory or the ACT as it is better known; sits in the south east corner of New South Wales. As the Capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, it is the seat of power for the Federal Parliament and governing political party.

ACT is the smallest self governing territory in Australia with a population of just over 350,000, most of who reside within its Capital City, Canberra. But the ACT is not simply a political enclave. Surrounded by agricultural land, the Mountainous and Forested Namadgi National Park and the watersheds of three waterways, Naas Creek in the south, Cotter River in the west and Molonglo River in the northeast, there is plenty to see and do in our nation’s small but enigmatic capital territory.

Visitors often flock to the nation’s capital of Canberra, a purpose built city with historical War Memorials, cultural diversity and a thriving nightlife. What they may miss, are the other smaller yet still beautiful townships in the territory such as Williamsdale, Naas, Uriarra, Tharwa and Hall. These small townships give a glimpse of the past in what was originally a harsh and unspoilt environment.

Other must see attractions include the National Dinosaur Museum at Gold Creek, 11 kilometres north of Canberra. Ginninderra Falls in the north west and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in the south west where you will see our local wildlife as nature intended with everything from Kangaroos to Koalas and Emus.

For the more adventurous, visit Corin Forest in the south west of the territory to enjoy the excitement of bobsled riding, or traverse further south into the snowfields for skiing and snow boarding.

Other great places to visit are the Canberra Space Centre and Mt Stromlo Observatory both situated just south west of the city. Indeed, this 2,400 sq mtr territory, which is miniscule by Australian standards, abounds with Rugged Plains, Forests, Mountains and National Parks yet still retains that feeling of a major state within the confines of its parliamentary capital, Canberra.
