Hong Kong Information

Hong Kong in China is one of the most densely populated in the world with a population of over 7 million people. Once under British rule the city is now one of China’s most important financial cities with the GDP in excess of 225 billion and the local Hong Kong Dollar is the ninth most traded currency in the world.

Hong Kong is entrenched with history with thousands of years of establishment. In 1839 refusals by the then Qing Dynasty to import opium lead to the great opium wars between China and the British who in 1841 took control of the area under British colonial rule. In 1997 the British rule ended and Hong Kong was handed back to the Peoples Republic of China.

Martial arts fans will also recognise Hong Kong as being world famous for the American Hong Kong actor Bruce Lee. Although Bruce was born in America his parents raises him in Hong Kong and his dedication to Kung fu introduced the western society to the Chinese martial arts. Today a Bronze statute in his memory is located in Hong Kong and is a popular tourist attraction.

Hong Kong is also well recognised globally for the main city Kowloon skyscrapers. It has more buildings higher than 35 metres than any other city in the world and contains 36 of the world’s tallest residential buildings.

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is another popular tourist attraction amongst visitors to the city. The museum features six permanent galleries in a massive 7,500 square metres with the Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art being one of the most impressive art collections of the Chinese Dynasties.

One thing not to miss in Hong Kong is a cable tram ride from Garden Road to The Peak that offers incredible panoramic views of the city. Once done with the Peak Circle Walk and the Lugard Lookout, the The Peak also features the Historical Gallery, Sky Terrace and the and the Peak Tower for fine dining.
