Mumbai Information

Mumbai formally known as Bombay is the richest city in India with a population of above 13 million people. It is hard to believe that Mumbai originated as a fishing colony of 7 islands to now be the second most populous city in India.

Mumbai is well known for its commercial strength as it features the corporate headquarters of some of the greatest companies contributing to the Indian economy. It is probably best known however for being the home of Bollywood the Hindi & Marathi film and television industry.

There is plenty of history to Mumbai with centuries of rule by different colonies adding to the beauty of the cit's architecture. The city railway station “Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus” is a prime example of this mixed cultural architectural splendour as the railway station was built in gothic style with a mix of British influence. The station is well known as it was featured in the famous movie Slumdog Millionaire.

A popular tourist attraction in the city is the Gateway of India built to welcome King George V and Queen Mary on their visit to the city. Nearby the Gateway of India you will find the Prince Wales Museum of Western India. The museum is fascinating and contains thousands of ancient Indian artefacts like the dancing Krishna.

Something unbelievable to see is Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, the massive open-air laundry. Here Indian washermen called “dhobis” hand wash clothes all day giving an insight to the hard workers of Mumbai.

For shopping or bargain hunting for presents there are plenty of markets all over Mumbai. One of the most visited is the Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar that translated means the “Theives Market”. There are some excellent antiques sold at the markets which are located near the railway station on Mutton.
