Dampier Information
Dampier actually got it's name from the English buccaneer William Dampier who visited back in 1688. The history holds plenty of shipwrecks, whaling and farming for pearls.
Today there is a huge iron ore company called Hammersley Iron located here. This would have to be one of the most massive ports for shipping as most of the mines from the region use Dampier for exporting their iron ore. it is quite spectacular as over 1600 vessels every year ship over sixt five million tonnes. Fascinating to see.
Dampier is a coastal playground for tourists and is a must see destination being located on the vast waterways of the Dampier Archipelago.
Major Attractions include boating, sailing, fishing, diving, windsurfing and swimming. There are 42 islands to explore providing you with the perfect holiday fun.
If you love game fishing, The Dampier Classic which is held every August is a must event for any enthusiast. Australian and world records have been set in Dampier and this just defines the excellent ocean life up here.
At the enterance to Dampier is a red kelpie dog statue. This sibolizes the cattle dog that was well known for working on farms rounding up cattle in outback Australia. It is also part of Australian folk history as many books and stories have been written about his wandering tales.
Dampier is also known to contain some truely authentic aboriginal rock art in the region. it's amazing to think that for hundreds of years before white settlement people painted their stories and tales onto rocks.
With plenty of accomodation, sights to see and things to do Dampier will amaze you like no other place. It is wonderful to see how the ovelooking lanscape of red dust and dirt transcends into the beautiful pristing ocean.
