Kalgoorlie Information
Kalgoorlie is a located east of Perth 600 kms away in the Eastern Goldfields.
It is predominatly a mining town with a high influx of tourism as tourists who want to know more about the gold rush era flock here in their thousands.
It was founded in june 1893 by prospector Patrick (Paddy) Hannan. Paddy Hannan and two others were on their way to Mount Youle when they accidentaly stumbled on gold while one of their horses had a broken shoe.
Once Paddy put in a claim reward for the gold find the area was swamped by men wanting a peice of the goldrush fever.
The area was originally called Hannan's but later changed it's name to Kalgoorlie. The Main street in town, Hannan street is still named after him and there is a water fountain statue of Paddy Hannan himself where he made his big gold discovery.
Today mining still continues in Kalgoorlie and drives the local economy. It hosts the Kalgoorlie Super Pit a mine which is so big that it can be seen from outer space. The mine has tours and you can see the daily blasts in action.
The preservation and history of Kalgoorlie is amazing. There are over 25 historical hotels and pubs in Kalgoorlie which still operate today. Just like days of old, miners still enjoy a nice round of beers after their shift.
Don't miss the goldfields museum while here. There are lots and lots of historical facts about Kalgoorlie that will stmulate your mind.
Also check out the C.Y.O'connor pipeline. This pipeline was build to supply water to Kalgoorlie and runs from the Mundaring Weir in Perth all the way to Kalgoorlie. That is over 600 Kms the same distance as from the England Channel to the Scottish border.
