Katanning Information
Katanning with a population of aproximately 4000 people is a great stop on the way travelling through the South West. Make sure to pack your camera as you have found a true Aussie farming community here.
The name Katanning is expresses by the indeginous Australians as "kart-anning" which means "Meeting place of tribes". Originally settled by Europeans in 1835 it actually today hosts a relatively large Muslim community of about 350 people and hence the Katanning Mosque is a good attraction in town.
Entering town you will see an antique truck loader with serveal scultptures of sheep made from corrugated iron. Although there is a big agricultural community in Katanning there is also a few things to see and do.
Visit the spectacular castle winery and see the roller flour mill. locals are always friendly and Katanning is a prime example of multicultralism living together in harmony.
You won't believe your senses when you visit the Katanning playgroung. Built with giant oversized structures and named the "All Ages Playground" even adults of all ages will enjoy the slides. the perfect place for a family picnic.
Alongside the playground is also the famous Katanning miniture railway. Run every second and fourth Sunday by volunteers this will bring back childhood memories.
Check out the Kobeelya house. Originally someones mansion then becoming a girls school it is now a busy conference centre and can accomodate up the 76 people. Probably also one of the best romantic place in WA to have your wedding.
Staying in Katanning is wonderful as you are ony a short drive away from several other rural towns and camping places to explore. Lots of heritage buildings and magnificent wildflowers exist around the region.
