Kwinana Information
Kwinana is the outer suburb of Perth and is located just before Rockingham. Although Kwinana is mostly an industial and urban sprawl, there are three public beaches not far away in Cockburn sound area. There is also the Speclacles wetland, bushland and pablic parks, making it a good place to picnic in if you don't want the regular tourist crowds.
Kwinana was named after the SS Kwinana, a ship that was driven ashore there in 1922. Some of its suburbs take their names from the sailing ships that first brought immigrants to Western Australia, for example, Medina, Calista and Parmelia
Kwinana is actually an Aboriginal word, from the Kimberley region, meaning 'pretty maiden'.
BP was the founder of the Kwinana industial area and you will see the amazing Perth oil refinery and power stations located there. The local companies are keen to be seen preserving the environment and claim to demonstrate the best practice in production methods and environmental safeguards.
The biggest tourist attraction in Kwinana are the Kwinana aquatic centre for swimming and the Perth Motorplex if you are seeking the adrenalin action
The Perth Motorplex opened in 2000. It caters mainly for drag racing and dirt track speedway, although other events are held there regulary such as the Motorvation annual car show. It is a must place to visit for any car enthusiast or racing fan.
Motorplex features a state of the art lighting, licenced bars with catering and also has a "Snake pit", a purpose pit built specifically dedicated for cars to do burn outs in.
During the 2008 Motorvation event, the car club Antilag shocked and distressed many with their epic burnouts that resulted in a number of members cars being confiscated and banned from future events.
