Tom Price is situated in WA’s mighty Pilbara region, and holds the title of highest town in Western Australia, laying 747 metres above sea level.
With a population of only around 2721 and a median age of 29, Tom Price has developed a rather young, family-oriented community.
Aside from being known as the country’s most prominent iron ore mining town, Tom Price is also famous for it’s abundance of natural, breathtaking views.
Located on the edge of the Hamersley Range is Tom Price’s Mount Nameless, the highest mountain with four-wheel-drive access in the country.It can also be accessed by foot and a trip to the top is something not to be missed when visiting the inland town. The peak is known as Jurndamurneh to the local Indigenous peoples, which means ‘wallabies live near here’.
A wealth of native wildlife can be seen at the nearby Karijini National Park or Kings Lake, which is a popular recreational area set with barbeques and gazebos in a natural bushland.
Being WA’s second largest national park, it holds many wonders for the active tourist, including waterfalls, walking trails, lookouts, deep gorges and natural pools. Guided tours are held from May to October, Tom Price’s tourist season.
The annual average temperature of the town is 33.3 degrees Celsius, and in summer most days will near on 40 degrees.
Another popular activity is to take a tour of the Pilbara Iron Ore Mine. Here you will learn about the town’s history, as well as the significance of the mining industry on its establishment.
