Wagin Western Australia
As one of the largest towns in the southern Wheatbelt region, Wagin has a lot to offer. Established in the early 1880’s as a farming town, it is notable that such an abundance of attractions and restaurants are even available to keep visitors busy.
A Heritage Walk through the town is a popular activity, and includes a visit to the Post Office, Town Hall and Court House. The town’s water well and ‘bird place’ are also points of interest to any tourist.
Wagin, like many Western Australian country towns, is home to an array of beautiful native flora and fauna. Wildflowers in particular are a sight not to miss and flower at their best from August to November.
Upon arrival to Wagin you will be welcomed by the giant ram, erected in 1985 by the town’s residents to symbolise the town’s success in the sheep farming industry. Wagin is home to Western Australia’s largest agricultural show, Woolorama, an annual event attracting more than 30,000 visitors to the area every March.
Woolorama showcases the latest farming technology, and is also a two day celebration filled with family fun. Visitors will enjoy an array of animal and produce displays, shearing, sheepdog and inventor competitions, art, fashion shows, gourmet food and sideshow alley.
The Wagin Historical Village is a must visit, and it is here you can learn about the 200 year development of a typical rural Australian community. The village is the only site in Western Australia with such a comprehensive collection of restored and replica buildings, farming equipment and machinery.
The collection of buildings portrays an actual pioneer village and the first was built in the 1880’s. Many were built using local and readily available materials such as wattle and mud.
