Auckland Information
Auckland, located at the top end of New Zealand’s North Island and bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the east and the Tasman Sea on the west is one only a few places in the world to enjoy two harbours contained on two different stretches of water. With a population of almost 1.4 million, Auckland straddles a volcanic region that has spawned over fifty volcanos and is littered with the remnant Fissures, Cones, Lava Lakes and Lagoons and although all are considered extinct, the overall volcanic area is only listed as dormant.
By far the most populated area in the country with over 31% of the population, Auckland’s demographic breakdown is made up from a large mix of races and creeds from around the globe, the largest Polynesian population in the world and is considered the cosmopolitan city of the islands.
The attractions in Auckland are too numerous to mention in one article and range from Museums, Amphitheatres, Parks and Stadiums to the iconic Sky Tower, the tallest free standing structure in the southern hemisphere and the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Outside the urban reaches of the city, other attractions loom as nature turns on her splendour with Extinct Volcanos, Mountains, Pristine Bushland and a myriad of small islands that fall under the Auckland jurisdiction, most now preserved in national heritage parks.
Nightlife in Auckland instils a bohemian feel to the city with clubs, café bars and restaurant strips along a number of the city roads, mixing seamlessly in with the shopping areas like Queen Street – the main road from the city to the harbour, Karangahape Road, also known as K Road and Ponsonby, a stretch of Arts, Cafes and Bars on the west of the city, known for its cultural and historical significance.
With Music and Arts festivals, Craft Fairs and Markets, a host of Museums including the MOTAT, Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology, there is always something to see and do. All in all, it’s a holiday destination that will leave you wanting more.
