Christchurch Information
Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand’s south island and the second largest urban area in the country is situated down the east coast, the proximity of which makes it the perfect location as the southern hemisphere’s ‘Gateway to Antarctica’.
The 400,000 plus residents are used to the comings and goings of outsiders as Christchurch National Airport has been the staging post for expeditions from Italy and the USA as well as being New Zealand and Australia’s main supply route to the Murdoch and Scott bases in Antarctica.
Christchurch City has been designed for the tourist, its grid layout of main roads and streets makes getting around the city, child’s play and the ongoing development is aimed at making the city as pedestrian friendly as possible.
At the heart of the city is Cathedral Square holding regular market days where local produce stalls mix with the food and beverage carts alongside cafes, bars and restaurants for the perfect market shopping experience and with the newly refurbished City Mall, encompassing well laid out floral beds and specially designed seating, the whole area has a more relaxed feel.
For those interested in the arts, a visit to the Cultural Precinct, an area of just under one square kilometre, is the place to see. Included in this relatively small area you will find Christchurch Arts Centre, Canterbury Museum and the Art Gallery in addition to areas of Cultural significance and other Heritage attractions.
Nature is also an important aspect of Christchurch life, known as the Garden City, it has numerous parks and gardens such as Hagley Park, the Botanical Gardens, Willowbank Wildlife Park and Travis Wetland, an ecological program to bring the wetlands and its native wildlife into inner city living.
Surrounding the city are many beautiful sandy beaches stretching from Waimakariri River in the north to Sumner in the south. You have everything you need for a holiday of a lifetime.
