Dunedin Information
Dunedin, situated on New Zealand’s south island and considered the educational centre of the country is home to the University of Otago, the oldest University in New Zealand. With a population of almost 125,000 and 21% of that attributed to the University, Dunedin enjoys a large youth culture that spawned the music and fashion centres of the city.
Dunedin is considered one of the main historical and cultural centres of the island with incredible examples of Victorian and Edwardian Architecture. Some of the main buildings with significant architectural relevance include First Church, Otago Boy’s High School and Dunedin Railway Station are remnants of more affluent times stemming from the gold rush era, prevalent throughout the Australasia area in the late 1800’s and beyond.
Dunedin is derived from the old Gaelic name, Edinburgh and is proud of its Scottish Heritage. Many of the streets are named after their Edinburgh counterparts and there is a statue of the famous poet, Robert Burns situated in the heart of the city.
Built on a relatively small area of flat land in the midst of rolling hills, Dunedin is home to Baldwin Street, considered as the steepest street in the world, take a walk to the top, or better still, try and cycle all the way up, many have tried and very few have made it.
As with any city that boasts a major youth culture, the activities are plentiful, from Surfing at St Claire Beach to Wind Surfing in the Harbour Basin, Fishing and Boating and a myriad of walks across rugged coastline or pristine bush, the choice is yours. One not to miss attraction is Cadbury World where 70% of New Zealand’s chocolate is made.
Other major attractions include Tunnel Beach, a spooky jaunt through the cliffs to a secluded yet beautiful spot, well worth the visit. Larnach Castle, stated as the only castle in New Zealand and Speights Brewery on Rattray St, where you will be taken on a historical journey through the making of beer.
