Palmerston North Information
Palmerston North in New Zealand is the main city of the Manawatu Wanganui region with a population of about 90,000 people. Palmerston is named after Viscount Palmerston the former Prime Minister of Great Britain. Locals nickname their city “Palmy”.
The city is home to very large proportion of students and Palmerston North is well known for being a student city with over 70 major educational institutions. Some of the most famous and well known include Massey University, The International Pacific College and the Universal Collage of Learning.
The main part of the city is known as “The Square” as the streets are arranged in a grid like formation. In the centre of The Square is a seven-hectare park with lakes, fountains, Clock tower and a war memorial dedicated to Te Peeti Te Awe Awe. In Mãori the Square is known as Te Marae o Hine that means “The Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace”.
There are a number of sculptures throughout the city of Palmerston North with many dedicated to the influence of the Mãori people. Some of the best to see include the Rangitane Guardians, Spirit of Place, United-Divided, Returning Column and the Prime and Numbers Sculptures.
Nature lovers and Biking enthusiasts will also appreciate the many parks and gardens throughout the city with plenty of bike tracks for some great exercise. A great event to be involved in is the annual bike jam held every year in May.
The most popular places to swim and relax at in the summer months is at the Lido Aquatic Centre and the Freyberg Community Pool. The Beach is just a short 20 Kilometers away with Himatangi and Foxton Beach being the most popular.
For adrenalin action go-kart fun the Daytona Indoor Raceway is another great activity and is located at 23 Bennett Street.
