Wanaka Information
Wanaka is a very popular tourist town situated on Lake Wanaka in the Otago region of New Zealand. Tourism is the primary industry of Wanaka all year round. In winter it has great skiing, autumn features unbelievable colours and wildlife with summer bringing the lake alive for popular water sports and fishing.
The nearby Mt Aspiring National Park is another big attraction and drawcard for extremely popular eco tourism. The national park offers plenty of accessible nature walks with one of the most popular being the Rob Roy Glacier walk.
In winter, Wanaka is located directly in some of Australasia’s largest snow skiing areas and the town comes alive with nearby ski resorts like Treble Cone, Snow Park, Cardrona Alpine Resort and Snow Farm abuzz with families and young alike. Treble Cone has a reputation for one of the best lift accessed terrains and is popular amongst advanced, expert and intermediate skiers. For families or beginners Cardrona is the place to be as it has one of the best instructor training centers.
For cuisine, fine meals and entertainment, Wanaka is a food and wine lover’s dream all year round. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants with a wide variety of nationality dining experiences to choose from. In summer the nearby wineries and breweries come alive with some of the world’s best wines in New Zealand being produced locally in Wanaka.
Many annual events are held in Wanaka all year round with too many to mention. One of the biggest is the Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival held every year in January. The Triathlon draws thousands of spectators to Wanaka and is part of a global challenge series.
Another fantastic way to experience Wanaka is with a scenic flight over the region. Sky diving is another popular activity for the avid adrenalin seeker.
