Palmerston Information

Palmerston is the sister city of Darwin located just 7 kilometres away with a population of around 30,000 people. Comprised of 18 suburbs surrounding the city centre it is the second largest city in the Northern Territory and one of the fastest growing.

The city is named in honour of Lord Palmerston the prime minister of the United Kingdom in 1855. Although named after a famous former UK Prime Minister the city of Palmerston was officially only established back in 1983.

The city centre revolves around two major shopping centres being the main Palmerston Shopping Centre and the Palm City Oasis Shopping Centre. There are also two light industrial areas evolving with the growth of the shopping centres that are developing the massive growth of the surrounding suburbs of Palmerston.

Palmerston is also well known for its rapid growth in the education sector. There are eight primary schools and two secondary schools but the crown jewel of Palmerston is the well known Charles Darwin University located in the suburb of Durack. The campus hosts an array of academic subjects to study and also features the school of tourism and hospitality, which is fast becoming one of its most sought after courses with students.

Spot also plays a large role to the city and the Palmerston Football Club nicknamed the Magpies after the famous ALF team of Collingwood features a strong presence in the city’s culture. The city also has a fantastic skate park located on University Avenue and an Olympic size swimming pool popular with the locals to cool down on hot and humid days.

For those seeking a great budget holiday Palmerston is the place to stay. The local shopping centres are much cheaper than in central Darwin and you are closer to outback places such as Humpty Doo, Kakadu and Litchfield National Park that you must to see on your holiday to the Northern Territory
