Pine Creek Information

Pine Creek in the Northern Territory is a small town with a population of about 300 people. As Pine Creek is located off the Stuart Highway it is a popular tourist stop for travellers that are journeying between Darwin and Alice Springs.

Prior to European settlement the Aboriginal clans inhabited the area for thousands of years. The main tribes included the Wagiman, Agicondi, Jawon and Arigoolia.

Europeans came to Pine Creek in 1870 during the construction of an overhead telegraph line. When gold was found at Pine Creek in 1871, it led to a mini gold rush, which lasted till the middle 1970’s.

A nearby attraction is the Railway Museum, which features the train station, railway equipment, weighbridge, history and more. It is located in the old station and well worth seeing. Adjacent to the Railway Museum are some interesting mining equipment displays.

Another great place to see is the National Trust Museum located in the old Pine Creek Repeater Station. The museum contains many historical artifacts including rocks, bottles, fossils and Chinese miners items left behind.

A great place for meals and entertainment is Lazy Lizard Tavern and Restaurant located on Millar Terrace. The tavern features a very nice outback bar for drinks and the bistro also provides excellent meals.

At the Lazy Lizard there are also some great artworks by Bolda Hunter who has lived with the Aboriginal people and is internationally recognised.

There are a number of annual festivals in Pine Creek. A very popular event is the NT Gold Panning Championships and the Gold Rush Festival held early May where tourists and travellers can try their luck at panning for gold. Two other great events not to miss are the Didgeridoo Jam and the Pine Creek Rodeo.
