Uluru Information
Uluru, also known as ‘Ayers Rock’ is one of the most recognisable of Australian Icons. Situated about 450 kilometres from its nearest major town of Alice Springs, this World Renowned Rock stands 348 metres high in the Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park and at with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, it is one of the most famous attractions in Australia.
Uluru is also one of the most sacred sites in the region for the Anangu Aboriginal People who have lived there for over 40,000 years. The area is teaming with wildlife with over 46 species of Native Mammals known to inhabit the Uluru region.
Such is the significance of the site to the Aboriginal people, camping in the area is forbidden. For those wishing to base themselves in the region and travel through the National Park, there is ample accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort, about 18 kilometres outside Uluru at Yulara, a small township with a population of about 3,000 people and whose existence came about as a tourist centre for Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park.
The resort caters for everyone from Campers to 5 Star Accommodation with several facilities for dining. There is also Longitude 131, a superior luxury tented site with views of the rock.
Although there are tours and walks up Uluru through the route taken by Ancestral Mala men, the Anangu do not climb the rock due to its great spiritual significance. Neither have they closed the climb, hoping instead that the visitors would themselves choose to respect their culture by not climbing.
Also within the park, about 40 kilometres from the rock is Kata Tjuta – the ‘Olgas’. These large domed rock formations cover an area of nearly 22 sq kms with the highest point, Mount Olga, dwarfing its nearby cousin, Uluru by over 200 metres. Geologists believe that if you took a cross section of the National Park, a sandstone belt would be seen running from Ayers Rock to the Olgas, linking them as one.
