Albury Information
Albury is the second largest inland city in New South Wales with a population of about 60,000 people. The city lies on the northern side of the Murray River that divides the states of New South Wales and Victoria.
The city of Albury has some thriving industries and acts as the hub for the surrounding agricultural areas. Although tourism is not the greatest contributor to the city’s economy there are some great tourist attractions with things to do and see in Albury. Fishing on Lake Hume is popular and the wine regions surrounding the city are a big drawcard in attracting visitors.
Since its establishment in 1839, Albury also features some fascinating heritage buildings that are well worth seeing. There are over 18 heritage buildings with significant history including the Railway Station (1881), Town Hall (1907) and Soden’s Hotel (1855).
Lake Hume is a great place fish and get back to nature. The Lake has plenty of Murray Cod and Silver Perch for angling enthusiasts and there are plenty of waterbirds like Billabongs, Cormorants, Pelicans, Swans, Egrets and more for the birdwatcher and wildlife warrior.
Nature Lovers will enjoy a stroll through the Albury Botanic Gardens situated in the heart of the city. There are four hectares of gardens with more than 1000 native and exotic plant species.
The Army Museum Bandiana is another great attraction to Albury and is located on Anderson Road. The museum is one of the largest military museums in New South Wales and features historical war artefacts like vehicles, tanks, motor cycles, medals, army uniforms, guns photos and more.
The Albury Regional Art Gallery is also a great place to see for art lovers and the gallery is located in one of the town’s best historical buildings. The gallery is always changing with different exhibitions featuring contemporary artworks.
