Batemans Bay Information
Batemans Bay is a costal New South Wales town with a population of about 18,000 people. Being the closest seaside town to Canberra it is a very popular tourist destination. During the major Holidays the town swells to about 30,000, in particular the Canberrians coming from Australia’s Capital Territory.
Captain Cook named Batemans Bay after Nathaniel Bateman in 1770 however the town was not officially established until 1885 when the port was proclaimed. The towns industries include a sawmill, oyster farms and heaps of forestry and eco-tourism services that are interesting for travellers to see and experience.
Being a major tourist destination, the town has a fantastic holiday feel to it. Many shops including the Village Centre Batemans Bay are all geared up for your holiday shopping pleasure. For golfing enthusiast there is even a 27 hole golf course at the Catalina Country Club.
There are heaps of activities and things to do in Batemans Bay. Popular choices include fishing the Batemans Bay coastline and enjoying Clyde River oyster’s fresh from the estuary. Houseboats are available for hire on the Clyde River and are very popular during holidays so book early.
Eco tourism action can be found in the Murramarang National Park where you will see heaps of wildlife and the local grey kangaroos, which so many people from overseas enjoy. The Birdland Animal Park is another great eco tourism spot with a massive collection of Australian wildlife including waterfalls and even the Birdsville express train that is not to be missed.
For the more action orientated there is kayaking, snorkelling, sailing and swimming on the water. If you are looking for the best spots then Pebbly Beach and Richmond Beach is not far from Batemans Bay in Eurobodalla and makes the perfect day trip to enjoy a picnic while seeing kangaroos on the beach.
