Bega Information
Bega in New South Wales is the economic centre for the Bega Valley region. The name Bega in the Aboriginal language means “Big camping ground” which just about sums up the region. Originally founded in 1830, Bega has a small population of about 5,000 people.
The Bega Dairy Cooperative Limited is situated in Bega and the town is famous for the Bega cheese which is manufactured here. The Dairy was set up in the 1890’s and is today one of Australia’s largest cheese companies selling cheese locally and internationally. Visit the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre which tells of the story of the company.
You will find plenty of history and heritage in Bega. There are heaps of heritage listed buildings all over the region and some of the best include the Bega courthouse, built in 1881 and the Rosewear shop in Carp street built in 1899.
Another great historic site to see in Bega is the Kameruka estate. The estate will captivate you with its architectural design. Often there are bush dances and other events held at the Kameruka Hall, so join in and mingle with the locals.
Bega is a popular destination in winter as people stay there because of its proximity to the snowy mountains. During the summer months many people visit Bega for camping adventure.
Environmental lovers will enjoy Aragunnu in Mimosa National Park which offers some spectacular views. Also don’t miss Mumbulla Creek Falls where there is a beautiful rock pool for swimming and relaxing.
The Bega Farmers market is the perfect place for you to buy the freshest local produce. It is held on the 3rd of each month at Littleton Gardens between 9am and 2pm.
The biggest event in Bega is the Cobargo Folk Festival which is held every year in February. Don’t miss it
