Coonabarabran Information

Coonabarabran in New South Wales is a popular town for holidaymakers intending on visiting the Warrumbungle National Park. The name Coonabarabran comes from the aboriginal language meaning “Peaceful”.

A major drawcard to Coonabarabran is the Warrumbungle and Siding Spring Observatories. Both observatories are at the forefront of astronomy research and offer night sky viewing. Coonabarabran has been labelled the Astronomy capital of Australia.

An excellent and interesting museum to see is the Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition located in the towns visitor centre. The exhibition contains the skeleton and skull of the largest marsupial ever found. The remains are believed to be some 30,000 years old.

Another great Museum to Coonabarabran is the Crystal Kingdom Minerals and Fossils Museum. The museum displays some of the world’s rarest zeolite crystals and is a great place for anyone interested in geology.

Coonabarabran also features the Pilliga Pottery, which is one of finest bush potteries in Australia. Seven days a week you can see potters at work and the gallery is the perfect place to purchase a nice holiday souvenir.

Nature lovers will enjoy Warrumbungle National Park and the Pilliga Woodlands. There are plenty of great bushwalking trails and fantastic lookouts for spectacular views. The national park also contains the famous rock formation known as the Breadknife.

There are also several wineries around Coonabarabran with the most popular being the Wattagan Estate and Coonandry Winery.

Golfing enthusiasts can also enjoy a nice round of golf at the Coonabarabran Golf Club. Although the golf course has 9 holes, two sets of tees are used to make an 18-hole game.
