Narrabri Information
Narrabri is a small town located on the Naomi River in New South Wales. The main economy of the town centres on farming in particular wheat, cotton and cattle. Established in 1860 its name originates from the first property in the district that was called the Narrabry Run and in the aboriginal language Narrabri means “Forked Waters”.
One of the biggest attractions especially amongst environmental lovers is the nearby Mt Kaputar National Park. Mt Kaputar hosts a natural wonder being the famous Sawn Rocks that can only been described as looking like organ pipes in a church. The rock formation were created from Narrabri’s volcanic past and is a must see for any traveller or tourist to the region.
Avid rock climbers will also appreciate Mt Kaputar for its summit that is 1,512 metres above sea level. Once at the summit the panoramic views are guaranteed to leave memories for a lifetime and are well worth the effort if you are fit enough and up for the challenge.
In the centre of town the Narrabri Old Gaol Museum is another great attraction. Getting a taste of yesteryears prison life the museum dates back to the 1880’s and is complete with plenty of archival history and artefacts including some fascinating paintings of Dalway a previous prisoner of Irish decent.
For those interested in communications, Narrabri is home to the Australia Telescope at the Paul Wild Observatory. Six massive 22-metre antenna dishes are used for radio transmissions and astronomy that provide a great place to see when visiting Narrabri.
Not to be left out, Narrabri also features a great golf course. The Narrabri Golf Club features a perfect 18-hole course set amongst wonderful scenery being 5,941 metres and par 71. A challenging course but more importantly an interesting layout that is a hit amongst any avid golfer.
