Wagga Wagga Information

Wagga Wagga in New South Wales is a large city with a population of about 48,000 people. It was originally explored in 1829 and became a village in 1847. After its rapid growth and popularity it became a town in 1849 and was declared a city in 1946. Currently Wagga Wagga is the fifth largest inland city.

In the aboriginal language, Wagga Wagga means “The place of many crows”.

Wagga Wagga is also well known for its sporting success. Often the media refer to the “Wagga effect” as the town has a disproportionately large number of champions that have come from the area. Some of these include Mark Taylor, Wayne Carey, Michael Slater, Geoff Lawson, Steve Elkington and Nathan Hines.

The Murrumbidgee River in Wagga Wagga is a popular holiday spot. It is the perfect place for swimming and canoeing. The name Murrumbidgee in the aboriginal language means “Big Water”.

The Wagga Wagga Botanical Gardens are a place not to be missed. The Gardens are set on 20 hectares in the western suburb of Turvey Park. Apart from the wonderful scenery and greenery there is also a small zoo, Chinese Pavilion, Aviary, Chapel and model Railway to discover.

Having a large population there are also many galleries and museums in town. The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Steam and Vintage Museum and Rail Heritage Museum are some of the great ones to see. Wagga Wagga also has the Australian Pen Museum which is the only museum in Australia dedicated to writing implements.

There are also many wineries in Wagga Wagga and one not to miss is the Charles Sturt University Winery. Established in 1977 the winery offers premium table wines and is an iatrical part in Australia’s wine making techniques.
