Walcha Information
Walcha in New South Wales is a small town with a population of about 2,000 people and was established in 1852. The Apsley River passes through the town which leads to Apsley Falls.
Agriculture is the main industry of Walcha in particular sheep and beef cattle. It has been nicknamed the “Pasture Wonderland” as the climate is some of the best in the world suited to agricultural industries. There have also been many champion Thoroughbred horses bred here with the best being Blue Spec which won the Melbourne Cup in 1905.
One of the major attractions drawing tourists to town is Apsley Falls located just 20 kilometres east of town. The first fall drop is 85 meters and the second is 65 meters to the bottom of the gorge. The Waterfall is surrounded by some of the most picturesque scenery in Eastern Australia. Aboriginal people refer to Apsley Falls as a significant meeting place and believe the Rainbow Serpent created the gorge in the Dreamtime.
The Willi Willi and Werrikimbie national Parks nearby Walcha offer some excellent camping spots for some bushwalking, bike riding or 4wd eco tourism adventure. Fishing enthusiasts will also enjoy catching some trout or bass from the local Apsley River.
A top spot in town not to miss is the Pioneer Cottage where there are ten buildings full with history including Aboriginal artefacts. There is also a hangar that houses the first Tiger Moth aircraft which was used for fertiliser spreading in the farming crops.
Many notable people have come from Walcha such as Andrew Laurie the rugby union player for the Wallabies, Casey Stoner the famous Grand Prix motorcyclist and Mrs Esther Stace who jumped an amazing 1.98 meters in the side saddle horse jumping show which is a world record still held today.
