West Wyalong Information
West Wyalong is primarily a wheat and sheep producing town and is the largest cereal growing district in New South Wales. The Town has a population of around 4,000 people and is located on the Newell Highway.
The first inhabitants of West Wyalong were the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people before European settlement. In 1893 gold was discovered in West Wyalong and until the 1900’s West Wyalong was a productive goldfield when gold mining declined.
The Mining Poppet Head in West Wyalong is a tourist attraction and displays the town’s pioneering history of the gold era. It was established in 1894 and yielded 40 kilograms of gold.
Another great attraction is the Douglas DC3 Dakota plane located at Lions Park in town. Built in 1943 the plane was donated to West Wyalong and has become a town feature.
It gets hot during the summer months in West Wyalong and the best place to cool down is Holland Park Pool. Holland Park contains a full size Olympic pool and a waterslide.
The Bland History Historical Museum located in the old courthouse is another great place to see and displays the history of West Wyalong. The museum houses a large collection of memorabilia including mining, farming and war artefacts.
For a nice walk or cycle the Green Corridor Walking Track in West Wyalong makes a great outdoor adventure. There are various art sculptures to see along the track that have been created for your enjoyment by the West Wyalong community.
The West Wyalong Aboriginal Artifact Shop is a great place to experience the culture and history of the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. Here you can buy authentic Boomerangs, Didgeridoos and other Australia Aboriginal products.
