Ayr Information

Ayr is a town in Queensland which produces the most sugar cane in Australia with about 80,000 hectares harvested and making a whopping 1.25 million tonnes of sugar per year.

Ayr has a population of about 9,000 people and is a popular destination for people to stop in for and stay at in their exploration of Queensland Australia.

Situated on the Burdekin River, Ayr has magnificent wetlands and wildlife for you to experience. The mangrove lined estuaries make the perfect eco experience and if you like fishing you are sure to get a good catch here. For more fishing also try your luck at Groper creek where there is plenty of Barramundi and Mangrove Jack.

In Ayr you can also enjoy action water sports without the crowds that are prevalent to so many other popular tourist destinations. Enjoy waterskiing on the Burdekin River or go Kite surfing or windsurfing at Alva beach.

Magnificent bird watching experiences such as seeing endangered birds and species are a specialty of Ayr. There are nearly 280 species of birds recorded at Ayr with some being on the endangered species list. Also check out the Ayr Nature Display exhibition at 119 Wilmington Street. There are nearly 60,000 species of rocks, shells, butterflies and more.

Access to town is usually via the Burdekin Bridge which passes over wetlands, into the area. The Bridge was once the longest bridge in Australia and is also known as the Silver link.

A tourist hot spot for happy holiday snaps can be found at Plantation Park where you will see Gubulla Munda which is a 60 metre carpet snake sculpture.

Another must visit place in Ayr is the historic church. Weathered over time the church has history and is fascinating to see first hand.
