Bundaberg Information
Bundaberg lies on the Burnett River with a population of about 48,000 people and was established in 1870 originally for the creation of the timber industry.
Today Bundaberg has grown into a massive sugar cane industry because of the perfect subtropical climate is excellent for cane farming. It is here that the city’s best export Bundaberg Rum is made by the Bundaberg distillery.
An interesting fact is that Bourbong street in the town centre actually got its name as the result of a typographical error and was originally to have been named Bourbon street after the famous Bundy drink.
Tourism also plays a vital role to Bundaberg and there are many sights and attractions for travellers to explore. Visitors often travel to Bundaberg for the Great Barrier Reef and find themselves amazed as Bundaberg offers more than just that.
Located just 15kms from Bundaberg is Mon Repo beach which has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles in the world. Nesting turtles can be seen from mid November to February which is a very amazing experience and a must do event.
Hoffman’s Rocks is a very popular diving spot in Woongarra Marine Park. Divers will be amazed by the split bommie, two large submerged rocks with caves to explore.
Nature enthusiast will enjoy the walk along the sunset track in the Baldwin Swamp Conservation Park. There are over 75 species of waterbirds and heaps of wildlife to explore. See the bandicoots, echidnas and bats known as flying foxes.
Bundaberg features heaps of beaches north and south. A very popular beach to visit is at Bagara which boasts two open surf beaches as well as two still water swimming areas. Bagara is also a great spot to go fishing at all year round.
