Cardwell Information

Cardwell in Queensland is a popular tourist destination located on the Cassowary Coast. The township has a population of about 1,500 people most of which are involved in the tourism industry to ensure that you have a fantastic holiday experience.

In 1864 the Europeans first settled in the town and it was named after Edward Cardwell. A port was established which is today known as “Port Hinchinbrook”.

Cardwell has many attractions and tourists and travellers from far and wide come to enjoy a holiday along the coast, which is surrounded, by beautiful rainforests and scenery. Oyster Point, which lies just a kilometre south of Cardwell, is the access point for boating which leads to the Great Barrier Reef. When visiting to Cardwell many people come to see Hinchinbrook Island, which is one of Australia’s largest island National Park.

There is ample of hot fishing spots within the Cardwell area. Within the Hinchinbrook channel there is plenty of Barramundi, Trevally and monster Queenfish to catch. There is also plenty of great crabbing and prawning spots to ensure you go home with a nice seafood basket.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the Five Mile Swimming Hole located in the Cardwell forest. The swimming hole provides the perfect picnic spot and is located just 7 kilometres from the township. There are also barbecues available as the Five Mile Swimming Hole is not just popular with tourists but also the locals.

Another great attraction is the Cardwell Art Gallery and the Historic Post Office. The Historic post office displays some magnificent history and the art gallery features some great art works from the Girringun Aboriginal people who lived around the region of Cardwell for thousands of years.

Edmund Kennedy National Park is another great place to visit with plenty of walking trails and picnic areas.
