Charters Towers Information

Charters Towers is located 137 Kms inland from the coast and has a population of about 8,500 people. Originally the town was founded in 1871 when gold was discovered on Towers Hill.

When visiting you will notice the town is mildly elevated and at approximately 300 meters above sea level the climate is noticeably less humid than nearby Townsville.

The town provides a regional centre for the mining and beef industry in the surrounding areas however there is still plenty of action in tourism here.

The Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail is a great tourist drawcard for Charters Towers. The Ghosts of Gold bring together stories of legends and characters that made Charters Towers in its heyday. It is a well worthwhile experience not to miss.

Explore the grandeur of One Square Mile in town, which beautifully preserved demonstrated the magnificent heritage of the 1800’s where the town thrived with a flourishing business community.

In 1888 the Royal Arcade was built which housed the Charters Towers Stock exchange from 1890. It was one of Australia’s first few regional stock exchanges and will fascinate your senses.

The Towers Hill Walk is bound to be a hit with Eco and nature seekers. The best time is early morning and there is heaps of wildlife from floral fauna to kangaroos, wedge tailed eagles, whiptail and allied rock wallabies.

Other nature parks are Lissner Park, Centenary Park, Budekin Weir, Edeades Park and Defiance Mill Park. All provide a very relaxing and interesting atmosphere.

The Civic Club is perfect for a drink, shop for arts and crafts locally made or why not go to the drive in Cinema which is one of only six still operating in Queensland.
