Cloncurry Information
Cloncurry, Queensland is a small town of about 2,500 people which lies on the Cloncurry River which was named after the famous European explorers Burke and Wills.
Temperature can be very hot and Cloncurry has one of Australia’s highest temperatures recorded on the 16th January 1889 at 53.1 degrees. Due to the hot weather here there are plans in place to build a solar power plant to make the Cloncurry Australia’s first ever solar-powered towns.
Although the town is primarily a rural town with mining and pastoral industries dominating it can be exciting for travellers and there are a few interesting things to do and see.
Visit the Mary Kathleen Memorial Park to see the great Outback Museum. There are steam engines with farm and mining machinery telling tales of the town’s history. If you get inspired by the mining of the past you can also obtain a fossicking licence here with maps to go prospecting.
There are also three different cemeteries to visit. There is the Chinese, Afghan and Cloncurry cemetery. All three tell different stories of their past history and are well worth taking a look at.
Art admirers will enjoy the Fred McKay art Gallery which holds some amazing artwork. Every year the Ernest Henry art competition is held which draws submissions from artists all over the world. Only the best are chosen and exhibited here.
Chinaman Creek Dam located just 3kms from Cloncurry is another gem for Eco enthusiast. There are lots of nature walks for you to discover the wonderful birdlife.
The airport also has the original Qantas hanger where the first flight of Qantas landed. The flight was from Longreach to Cloncurry and carried the first ever passenger Alexander Kennedy. Well worth taking a look.
