Ingham Information
Ingham in Queensland is a relatively small town of about 5,000 people and is renowned for its history and culture. The town has a very large cane farming industry. Nearby is the Victorian Sugar Mill, the largest sugar mill in Australia.
Ingham is also known as “Little Italy” as in early cane cutting days many Italian migrants settled here. Today the Australian-Italian festival is held every year in May at the Ingham showgrounds. The festival attracts thousands of visitors and is not to be missed.
Slim Dusty once wrote a song about the Ingham as the “Pub with no Beer” from the original poem by Dan Sheahan. As the story goes in 1943 a farmer rode 20 miles for a beer at the Day Dawn Hotel in Ingham, only to be disappointed as American servicemen had drunk the bar dry the night before.
After being partly demolished the original pub with no beer was rebuilt as Lee’s Hotel. Today Lee’s hotel is still recognised in the Queensland Heritage trust as the original “Pub with no beer”.
