Longreach Information
Longreach in Queensland is named after the “long reach” of the nearby Thomson River. It was originally founded in 1887 but growth of the town didn’t happen until 1892 when a railway was built to the town.
There are around 3,100 people who live here and the town is generally a warm climate as it lies on the Tropic of Capricorn. Home to the Australia Agricultural College the main industries include farming of sheep and cattle but the town also holds some great tourism treasures to see and visit.
Longreach is actually the founding town of the great Australian airline Qantas. The Qantas Founders Outback Museum is an excellent display for tourists and travellers to see. There is a giant decommissioned Boeing 747-200 aircraft in one of the airlines original hangers.
Another great attraction is the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame showcasing the history and culture of the outback rural scene in Australia. The Hall was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988 and since opening has attracted more than 1 million people to Longreach.
The Railway Museum is another great place to see and visit in Longreach. The museum highlights some fabulous history and is very interesting.
If you feel like some exercise then why not hire a pushbike to see Longreach in a different way. The town also features a skate park and tennis courts for hire.
Eco adventurists will enjoy the Iningail nature reserve park. Located just 500 meters from Jundah Road it is a very nice tranquil place to relax and enjoy the scenery and fauna.
The town also features a cinema for your enjoyment so why not grab yourself some popcorn and relax at the local theatre.
