Magnetic Island Information

Magnetic Island in Queensland is a very popular destination off Townsville and is a small mountainous island just 52 kilometres in area. It has been labelled a suburb of Townsville however this should be reconsidered, as it is a substantial island of its own and the hottest place for tourists to go to when visiting the Townsville region.

Magnetic Island has about 2,000 permanent residents, most of whom are involved in the tourism industry to cater for your fantastic holiday pleasure. The name of the island initially came about because of what magnetic effect it had on the ship’s compass of Captain James Cook when he sailed on the east coast in 1770.

Over half of the island is a Mecca for wildlife and is declared a national park and therefore the perfect place for nature lovers to visit and enjoy. Magnetic Island also features a mountain named Mount Cook, which is 1,630 foot above sea level.

A popular spot on the island is Picnic Bay, which is named after the first Europeans that visited the Island in the 1800’s and made it their favourite picnic spot. In 1901 the first ever ferry service operated on to the island thanks to Sir Robert Hayles. It has since progressed to become a very frequent traffic point for tourists to go to back and from Townsville.

During the Second World War Magnetic Island along with Townsville became a very important military base. Today it has become one of the hottest tourism spots in far north Queensland.

The best places to visit on the island include Horseshoe Bay, Nelly Bay, Arcadia Bay, and West Point. All will surprise you with their own special qualities and holiday ambience.

The best way to explore Magnetic Island is to hire yourself a Mini-Moke at Armand Way in Alma Beach. Once you discover Magnetic Island you may never want to go back home.
