Mareeba Information
Mareeba, Queensland is a small to medium town with about 8,000 residents. The name Mareeba comes from an aboriginal word which means “meeting of the waters”. Before European settlement the Muluridji Aboriginal community was quite substantial in the area.
The weather is warm and Mareeba boasts plenty of sunshine. The main entrance sign to town welcomes you to Mareeba, 300 sunny days a year.
The town is well known for its agricultural and horticultural industries. cattle and poultry farming is common and there is an abundance in crops such as mangos, lychees, longans, nuts, sugar cane, avocados, pineapples, tea, coffee and other various tropical fruit plantations.
If you are backpacking through Queensland, then Mareeba is the ideal location for fruit picking and seasonal plantation work before exploring the rest of Queensland.
Mareeba has a particular diverse wildlife to discover. Being situated near the tablelands there are many native species such as kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos, cassowaries and native frogs. Any Eco enthusiasts will enjoy the wilderness and surrounding areas of Mareeba. There are plenty of tours available and the local friends at the visitor centre will be more than happy to organise things for you.
The biggest annual event not to miss is the Mareeba Rodeo which is held every year in July. There are clowns performing death defying feats to hold you breathless. Afterwards there is the procession of floats in the township to keep you entertained.
Mareeba also has the famous “Wheelbarrow Way” race every year held in May. Check it out for a something a little different and out of the ordinary.
