Maryborough Information

Maryborough was founded in 1847 and has a relative large population of about 22,000 people. this town was at one stage nominated to be the capital for Queensland before they decided Brisbane.

The town is situated and named after the Mary River and is enlisted as a Heritage City of Queensland.

The city has a large number of beautiful buildings that were recreated to replicate what is now known as ‘Old Maryborough’. This is the town’s original site which was occupied until 1855 when it was moved to its current position.

Old Maryborough is now nothing more than a series of information boards and plaques set along a Heritage Walk in lush tropical surroundings, and is an interesting site for visitors.

The only remaining unchanged features are the Baddow House and the Furber graves.

The most impressive building in (new) Maryborough is the City Hall. It was built in 1908 and is home to one of the city’s historical novelties, the Time Gun. The gun was a gift to the city from a previous Premier, John Douglas, as a response to criticism that the city had no clock. It was first fired on 21 March 1878 and is fired every Thursday at 1:00pm.

Queens Park, located on the Mary River, is one of the most charming parks in the state. A huge banyan tree, the band rotunda, the city fernery, the little statue and the views over the river all make it an idyllic place to unwind on a long trip. The band rotunda was actually built in Glasgow and shipped here in 1890. It is an early example of prefabrication, and is still used for shows today.

Not too far from the rotunda lies some 13-cm gauge railway tracks which the local Model Engineers and Live Steamers Association bring to life on the last Sunday of every month. Their train displays are not to be missed.
