Palm Cove Information
Palm Cove is located in the far north Queensland and has a relatively small population of about 1,800 people. It is a very popular tourist destination and the majority of residents are involved in tourism in one-way or another.
Aborigines originally inhabited Palm Cove before western settlement. When Captain James Cook discovered Australia he once stopped at Palm Cove to replenish water supply. A few years later the G.E. Dalrymple ship landed in 1873 on the sandy shores which lead to Australia’s largest documented beachfront invasion as the Aboriginal people tried to fight off the western intrusion on their land.
The exotic palms trees seen at Palm Cove today were once planted by Archdeacon Campbell who was the rector at the St. Johns Church of England in Cairns who purchased the surrounding land in the 1900’s. The land was then sold in 1918 to the Albert family who then on sold the land to the Veivers family. In the mid 1900’s it was also the scene of a training spot for the Australian air force.
In 1958 the best swimming pool was built at the Reef House in Palm Cove as the owner being a bookmaker had the pool guy indebted to him for a punt. Today it is famously known as the Sebel Reef House & Spa Brigadier’s Bar.
