Rockhampton Information
Rockhampton is known as the beef capital of Australia, as the beef industry makes up the most part of the city’s economy and existence.
You are reminded of this upon your arrival and departure of Rockhampton via Bruce Highway, by the statues of Santa Gertrudis, Brahman, Braford and Droughtmaster bulls.
For those interested in history, there is plenty to do in Rockhampton, and you can start on the Heritage Route, which takes you on a journey through the city’s grand old architecture. Along this route you will also find the city’s lifeline, the Fitzroy River.
A visit to the Fitzroy river is a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. Activities include boating, water skiing, fishing and picnics along the water’s edge. Staying in one of Rockhampton house boats for the weekend is the favourite accommodation among visitors.
A visit to the headquarters of the Rockhampton Historical Society at Old Borough Chambers will allow you to explore all things in relation to the Capricorn region.
Archer’s Steam Tram Museum is another point of interest, and next, take a visit to Australia’s largest cultural centre, the Dreamtime Cultural Centre. Here you will experience the indigenous lifestyle and over 12 hectares of native plants and waterfalls.
The city’s botanic gardens are also a must-see, as they contain some of the most amazing indigenous flora and fauna. For those keen to further experience Rockhampton’s nature, the Cliff Kershaw Gardens cannot be missed. See the waterfall, which is illuminated at night and is surrounded by native flora.
A trek to Mount Archer Lookout will offer a more challenging nature hunt, with bush walking tracks of up to 100km over the city. After a trek, relax with a picnic or barbeque.
