Roma Information

An interesting and largely unknown fact about Roma is that it was the first site where oil and gas was discovered in Australia. As a memorial, the Oil and Gas Museum was opened and is a must see for Roma visitors.

The museum has something for everyone, including a comprehensive collection of multi media exhibits. The photographs, objects and stories will take you on a journey from Australia’s first petroleum discovery to today’s multi-billion dollar industry. Locals say the museum’s spectacular night show is not to be missed.

The Big Rig is another attraction paying tribute to the town’s flagship industry. Here you will find extravagant displays depicting the old trading days.

If you’re still thirsty for Roma history, you should take a walk along one of the town’s main streets, Hero’s Avenue, where hundreds of bottle trees stand in line forming the beautiful sight. Each tree symbolises a local soldier who lost his life in the First World War. For a look into Roma’s Aboriginal history, visit the Meadowland Museum.

Nature lovers should schedule visits to the nearby Mount Moffatt National Park and Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Many walking and hiking trails are on offer, and you will find some beautiful sights along the way including stunning flora, fauna and a breathtaking view from Boolimba Bluff. A steep 3.2 kilometre hike will grant you with panoramic views of the gorge entrance, towering sandstone cliffs covered in Aboriginal rock art, and the Carnarvon Creek. The creek winds through the gorge which is strewn with a multitude of native flora and fauna, including more than 173 species of birds.

After a vigorous day of adventure, visit Queensland’s oldest winery, Romavilla, to wind down with a taste of their wines.
