St George Information
St George in Queensland is a small town of approximately 2,800 people who live and reside here. It was named by Thomas Mitchell who crossed the nearby Balonne River on the 23rd April 1848.
The town’s industries are primarily cotton, sheep and wheat farming having access to lots of water from the Balonne River.
The Balonne River also features some great fishing for visitors and travellers to the town. Common fish caught in the area is the Murray cod, which is an excellent species to catch and very nice to eat.
St George is celebrated every year with the St George Show which is held every Labour Day long weekend. In case you are foreign to Australia then Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday in May every year.
There is also ample camping available in the area. Two fantastic spots are the Beardmore Dam and the Jack Taylor Weir. Both provide the outdoor adventure you are seeking and make sure you bring your canoe.
If wildlife and eco adventure is more your forte then head for the Balonne River Walk. There are heaps of spectacular birds, koalas and wildlife to observe. Another prime spot is the Buckinbah Weir just 15 kilometres from St George.
There is also the opportunity in St George to experience the wonderful farming life. If you want to experience the true outback then stay at a local farm. There are quite a few farm stays to choose from and all will invite you to experience the true farming life.
See local character Steve Margaritis and his unique egg carvings in town. Definitely a not to miss adventure, Steve creatively carves artwork out of emu egg shells which are then illuminated. Very extraordinary and beautiful.
