Stanthorpe Information
The small town of Stanthorpe is located in the heart of Queensland’s Granite Belt, and is known for being the state’s premier wine region. Over 45 wineries are open to the public for visits and tastings, and tours are available throughout the area.
Stanthorpe is the perfect place for backpackers, with plenty of cheap accommodation available. Wine and tourism are major players in the town’s economic balance, which has allowed for many fruit and vegetable picking jobs to be available to tourists between November and May.
With the reputation of being Queensland’s coldest town, Stanthorpe has the perfect climate for an array of fruit growing. The Biennial Apple and Grape Harvest Festival is held every even numbered year in February and March and is an event not to be missed.
The Storm King Dam is a place for the leisurely traveller to visit, with good fishing opportunities. Silver Perch, Yellowbelly and Murray Cod are popular catches; however you do need to obtain a permit either online from www.qld.gov.au/fishing or from a number of small businesses throughout the state.
In Stanthorpe’s surrounds you will find beautiful unspoilt National Parks. The Girraween National Park is very popular and has spectacular sights including granite rock formations, wildflower displays and exciting nature walks. Other parks such as the Boonoo Boonoo National Park and Bald Rock National Park too have a lot to offer. At Bald Rock you will find the largest rock formation in the southern hemisphere and at Boonoo Boonoo explore a magnificent river cascading down into a gorge.
For travellers wanting a picturesque experience, Stanthorpe is definitely the place to visit. Lavender grows abundantly in the area and several lavender farms are open to the public and make the perfect setting for a picnic. The farms have great gift shops, cafés and even friendly farm animals.
