Aldinga Information
Aldinga is a popular tourist destination in South Australia and well known for its long flat beaches providing the perfect seaside holiday. Aldinga was first established in 1857 and has a population of about 400 people.
Many tourists and travellers come to Aldinga from the city of Adelaide, as the town is located just 45 minutes away. One attraction to Aldinga is that you can still drive along the beach with your car, which has been banned in most populated cities and towns in Australia. The local council does patrol the beach and enforces a 10 kilometre per hour speed limit.
Swimming, Snorkelling, Diving, and Fishing are popular activities in Aldinga. One of the best places for snorkelling is off Aldinga Reef and the “Star of Greece” Shipwreck is a hot spot for diving enthusiasts.
Bushwalking is another great activity with the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park being the best place to visit. The native flora & fauna reserve is an excellent opportunity to encounter Australian wildlife and also makes the perfect picnic spot.
Aldinga is also surrounded by plenty of agricultural land in particular some of South Australia’s greatest wineries located in the region of McLaren Vale which is 5 kilometres North East.
Another great place to visit is the nearby town of Willunga located 5 kilometres east of Aldinga. Willunga has a weekly local produce market held every Saturday morning where you can purchase locally grown produce directly from the growers.
An event not to miss in Aldinga is the Santos Down Under Tour, which is held in mid January every year. The popular cycling event is one of South Australia’s biggest cycling events and is broadcasted internationally. Aldinga is one of the events best stages in the tour as the cyclists travel along the Esplanade road right on the beach.
