Coober Pedy Information

Coober Pedy is a small outback town in South Australia with a population of about 2,000 people. Coober Pedy is known as the “Opal Capital of the World” and draws thousands of tourists every year. In the Aboriginal language kupa-piti means “Whitemans Hole”.

All year round Coober Pedy is a very hot destination to see which is perfect for holidaymakers that can handle the heat. It is not uncommon for most part of the year to experience air temparature of 47 degrees or 118 Fahrenheit.

Many famous movie blockbusters have been filmed in Coober Pedy such as Mad Max, Red , Salute of the Jugger and Pricilla, Queen of the Desert. It was also the scene of the INXS music video Falling Down a Mountain.

Many of the residents in Coober Pedy live underground with refurbished homes in old mine shafts due to the scorching hot temperature in the day. There are many underground churches and places which offer underground accommodation.

One of the most popular tourist attractions to see is The Old Timers Mine Museum, which is entirely underground. The guided tours feature everything about opal mining from its early history to modern day mining methods.

Even if you don't like golf, the local golf course is a must play experience. The course is the only golf course in the world that is played at night with glowing golf balls due to daytime temperatures. The entire course is free of grass and golfers take a piece of grass around with then to tee off from each hole.

A great day trip from Coober Pedy is The Breakaways located about 33 kilometres north of town. The Breakaways offers some of Australia’s best outback views of a colourful rocky landscape. The best time to see The Breakaways is during sunset when the sandstone landscape comes alive with vibrant colours.
