Elliston Information

Elliston in South Australia is a small coastal town located on Waterloo Bay. Governor Jervois named the town in 1878 in honour of Miss Ellen Liston and was originally known as Ellie’s Town.

Fishing is a big attraction to the area and the town holds the annual Salmon Fishing competition from the 1st of June to the end of August. The competition is open to anyone as long as you pay the registration fee and the first prize is a staggering $3,000 for the heaviest Salmon caught. Apart from fishing, Elliston also boasts great abalone diving and rock lobsters.

A noticeable building in town is the Great Hall, which was built in 1968. The hall is covered with the largest mural of any building in Australia that depicts the history and story of the town. The Old Post Office opened in 1880 and Police Station 1881 are another two heritage buildings well worth looking at.

While staying in Elliston it is recommended to take the Great Ocean Drive to explore the surrounding areas. There are plenty of huge coastal cliffs and great places to see include Talia Caves, Walters Rock and the Cummins lookout. One not to miss on the drive is the famous artwork by John Turpie’s, which is titled “Everyone is a Boat Person”. It is located slightly north of Elliston and has become a famous icon to see in recent years.

A great attraction to Elliston is Flinders Island located about 25 kilometres offshore. Although you may require a charter for this trip, the island provides breathtaking views and plenty of wildlife to see including wombats.

Golfing enthusiasts will also enjoy a round at the Elliston Golf club that is open from May till September. The 18-hole course is 5,600 meters in length, is very challenging and affordable.

Surfing is also possible along many stretches of the beach, however because fishlife is abundant in the area, that means there are plenty of sharks and it could be risky.
