Goolwa Information

Goolwa in South Australia is a historic river port located on the Murray River. The name Goolwa comes from the aboriginal language and means “elbow” and the name is given the township as the Murray River bends in an elbow shape.

In 1853 Goolwa was established Australia’s first inland port allowing good and trade in the region, which led to the growth of the area. Today Goolwa is a great tourist attraction and the town still hosts the bi-annual South Australian Wooden Boat Festival in honour of its heritage.

The Murray River being the fifth longest river in the world and the mouth of the Murray River is accessable from Goolwa. There are plenty of charter cruises, for sight seeing and eco tours. A great cruise to experience is the authentic woodfired paddlesteamer PS Oscar W which is 102 years old.

Goolwa Beach is excellent for surfing and the perfect relaxing day beachside. There are some great beach fishing spots too or for something a little different why not go for a cycle along the beach.

The Goolwa Motor Museum can provide a great pit stop on your holiday adventure. Located in Gardiner Street, you will be amazed with a fantastic array of vintage cars on display.

For something a little different check out the River Dolls of Goolwa Museum located on Cadell Street. There are over 2,500 dolls; bears and toys on display which guarantee to excite young and old. The museum also comes complete with a candy shop that sells childhood and favourite sweets.

Golfing enthusiasts will enjoy the South Lakes Golf Club which features and excellent 18-hole golf course with Santana Anna Couch fairways and excellent greens. The course also features a magnificent glass wall in the Birdie Bistro with panoramic views of the course and countryside.
