Kingscote Information

Kingscote is located on Kangaroo Island in South Australia with a population of about 2,000 people. It is the most established town on the island and contains the islands Airport for travellers and tourists who prefer to fly to their holiday destination.

In January 1836 England sent four ships to colonise South Australia that landed at Kingscote. On arrival they developed a settlement and Kingscote was going to become the capital of South Australia. Due to bad farming on Kangaroo Island Adelaide was chosen.

A tourist attraction to Kingscote is the Hope Cottage Museum that contains a fascinating insight to the history and heritage of Kangaroo Island. The Cottage was originally built in 1859 as a homestead and today is the best museum on the island showcasing historical artefacts such as photos, clothing, furniture, vehicles, farming machinery and even a complete shearing shed and blacksmith shop.

Nearby the museum is the Cape Willoughby lighthouse that has been fully reconstructed. The lighthouse was the first built in South Australia and features the original fibreglass lantern.

Another great historical attraction to see is the Old Mulberry Tree that was planted in 1836 when Europeans first landed. The Mulberry tree still bears fruit today thanks to the first settlers.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the abundant wildlife. A star attraction is the colony of little penguins which are the smallest penguins found anywhere in the world. Pelican feeding is another popular activity with John the pelican man, daily at 5pm near the Kingscote wharf.

Kingscote is also one of the best places on Kangaroo Island to book your tour to explore the island. There are heaps of eco marine and inland environmental tours to choose from.
