Kingston Information

Kingston is a coastal town in South Australia and was officially established in 1860 when the Kingston Post office opened in the area. The town is named after George Strickland Kingston a great Australian Politician and architect.

The main two industries to Kingston are farming and fishing with tourism a fast growing industry for people visiting for a seaside holiday. Kingston is well known for the Big Lobster which a popular tourist attraction and stands a staggering 17 metres tall. Locals in Kingston nickname the Big Lobster “Larry”.

Another great attraction is the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse which is located on the foreshore of Kingston. The lighthouse has tours available for the public to climb to the top and the lighthouse provides spectacular panoramic views of the township.

There are various sculptures to see throughout Kingston with the Human Sundial being a favourite among tourists. Standing in the correct place on the sundial during the day the granite outer circle can actually tell you what time of the day it is. Other great sculptures include the Sealion and Mulloway at Pioneer Park.

Kingston features some of the best beaches for swimming. The two most popular are Pinks Beach and Wyomi Beach, which are sheltered from waves and provide a perfectly safe swimming environment for families.

Fishing is excellent in Kingston and the town’s jetty is one of the hotspots. The Jetty was originally built longer and was once used to ship out farming produce before the town’s railway was constructed.

Nature lovers can also enjoy the plenty of wildlife in the area with Butchers Gap Conservation Park being a town favourite. The park is located just a few kilometres south of Kingston and features a salt lake with sandy coastal dunes.
