Moonta Information
Moonta is a town of about 4,000 people and was first established and identified in 1860’s as a rich copper mining area. The main township is nicknamed “Little Cornwall” for its copper mining history. Tourism is also a fast growing industry with Moonta Bay becoming a hot spot for tourist seeking the perfect beachside holiday.
The most obvious tourist attraction to Moonta Bay is the town jetty that extends for several miles providing fishermen with uncrowded fishing experiences. With a good place to cast your line off the jetty, there are plenty of fish to catch like herring, garfish, mackerel, squid and prized fishes like snapper.
Another popular attraction is the Moonta Mines Tourist Railway. The rail journey takes about 50 minutes to complete and highlights the recovery process involved in copper mining of days gone past.
More mining history can be found at the Wheal Hughes Tourist Mine that tells the story of a Scottish sea captain named Walter Hughes who first owned the land around Moonta as a sheep station before he mined the land for copper.
Nearby Kadina’s Farm Shed is also worth seeing and features aninteractive display that highlights the local history of farming in Moonta and the surrounding regions.
The Moonta Arts Gallery in the town hall is a great place to see for art lovers. The gallery has a different exhibition each month and displays some great internationally renowned artists. If you are seeking more local art then the Gallery On The Bay features some great artworks for sale by the famous artist Peter Ruch.
Golfing enthusiasts can enjoy a round of golf at the Moonta Golf Club located in Milne Terrace. The course features a challenging par 70, 18-hole golf course and is generally open to the public.
