Parachilna Information
Parachilna in South Australia was once a town in the late 1800’s and over the years many residents have left which now makes Parachilna the perfect outback-Australian place to visit. In the Aboriginal language Patajilnda means “Place of Peppermint Gum Trees”.
Although Parachilna today is nothing more than a few abandoned buildings, an old railway station and an airstrip, it is a popular place for tourists and travellers to see, as Parachilna is the gateway to the nearby Parachilna Gorge. Parachilna was also the set location for the famous many Australian Feature films including Rabbit Proof Fence.
The most substantial building in Parachilna is the Prarie Hotel that dates back to 1876 and is a great Australia outback hotel to stay at. A major attraction to the Hotel is the dining room, which serves truly Australian cuisine such as kangaroo, emu, camel and goat dishes. The dining room is also well decorated with some truly authentic aboriginal artworks which create ambience.
Parachilna Gorge is a well-known for spectacular nature views and scenery, especially in spring when the wildflowers throughout the region come alive. Wildlife is also abundant and no doubt visitors will see plenty of emus and kangaroos hopping about.
Bushwalking, 4WD touring and mountain bike riding are very popular activities in Parachilna and there are also plenty of tours available. Another great way to see the area is a scenic flight that departs right on the doorstep of the hotel on the airstrip.
Aboriginal cultural tours are also a big hit with the Iga Warta Aboriginal community. The cultural tours cover more than just the landscape and cover everything from the Dreamtime cultural history to didgeridoo and boomerang making.
