Port Pirie Information

Port Pirie is the sixth biggest city in South Australia with a population of about 15,000 residents. The town is named after John Pirie the captain of the first vessel to sail through the area. Port Pirie was established in 1845 and is the site of the world’s largest lead smelter.

The Nystar smelter tour is very popular and takes around two hours to complete. On the tour you will learn about the smelting processes and see people at work giving you a better understanding what Port Pirie city is all about.

Game fishing is another big drawcard in Port Pirie, which is home to the longest white pointer shark (nicknamed the Shakka) caught in South Australia. If boating fishing is not your thing then there are plenty of great jetty, shore and river fishing spots.

History and culture is also rife in Port Pirie. The National Trust Museum is a great starting point with an exhibition detailing the shipping, smelting and rail history of the town. The Port Pirie Aerodrome is another great place to discover and houses wartime historical artefacts.

The Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery located in the tourism and arts centre is another of the city’s main attractions. At the centre you can catch the Pirie Rail Express and miniature train. A fibreglass replica of the Shakka is also on display here.

If you have come to Port Pirie on holiday with the kids then you have come to the right place, as the 4Shore Skate Park is a renowned hotspot for children to play at. The skate park is very close to Solomontown Beach and close to shops and cafés.

Port Pirie has plenty of festivals and events throughout the year with one of the best not to miss event being the Country Music Festival in October.
