Robe Information
Robe in South Australia is a small town fishing port with a population of about 1,500 people. The town was named after Major Frederick Robe, which founded the area as a shipping port in 1845. During the gold rush era of 1857 thousands of Chinese immigrants landed at Robe on destination to Ballarat and Bendigo.
Robe attracts many tourists seeking a seaside holiday. Long Beach is a popular beach for swimming, surfing and fishing. Long Beach is also one of Australia’s few beaches left where you can still drive your vehicle along the beach due to its firm sand composition.
The rugged rocky cliffs around Robe also provide ideal fishing and diving conditions. The best spots to fish include Rock fishing in Guichen Bay, wharf fishing at Lake Butler Boat Haven Channel or surf fishing between Long Gully and West Beach.
A great attraction to Robe is the Obelisk shipping marker found at Cape Dombey. It was built in 1855 and stands 40 ft high and is 100 feet above sea level. The noticeable red and white bands help guide mariners when boating.
For architectural history the Old Gaol is well worth visiting. The outer walls of the Gaol were reinforced with steel boiler plates from the shipwreck Admella as several prisoners escaped during the Gaols use between 1860 to 1881.
Nature lovers can explore the Little Dip Conservation Park that is located between Robe and Nora Creina. There are plenty of walking track and observation points for bird watching and wildlife. Another great environmental hot spot is the Penola cycle trails.
Golfing enthusiast will enjoy a round at the Robe Golf Club located in Morphett Street. The 14 fairway golf course is in a great location and 18 holes can be played as four fairways are played twice with a different tee location.
